The most courageous thing I’ve ever done…. March 28, 2007

When Nick and I shoot I try very hard not to think about my answer to the question of the week (see previous entry) before he turns the camera on me… often I am completely surprised by what comes out of my mouth.. and generally that spontaneity results in really, really honest answers… but not always. When reviewing the footage, I can always tell if I am not telling the full truth by the the way I hold my mouth… if I am holding back in any you can almost touch the tension….

so… if “producing my own show, because I finally decided that I was enough, and didn’t need anyone else to decide that for me”, wasn’t the most courageous thing I’ve ever done what is? (more…)

What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done? March 25, 2007

“Well, wouldn’t you feel degraded to be seen in the company of a cowardly lion? I would.”

So says the same named lion in the famous “Wizard of Oz”… funny how he turned out to be the bravest one in the bunch, huh? Guess he went in search of the very thing he already had….

So… what’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done? We want to know….

This week’s episode features our brand new Artist of the Week segment. We have chosen one of our favorite Etsy artists to profile… and she answers this weeks question too! Check it out!

What’s my greatest fear March 20, 2007

Failure… not being all that I was meant to be… never having had the courage to defeat my inner demons and live the life I was destined for…..looking back and saying “what if?”.

Even writing this makes me feel queazy and dark…..

Funny… cuz I have a lot of more obvious, more obviously terrifying, more everday fears.

As I kid I panicked myself to sleep every night…I’m not kidding… every night… thinking every plane that went over head was a nuclear bomb about to drop. Then I would have nightmares about being buried (more…)

What is your greatest fear? March 18, 2007

The only thing we have to fear…

Was FDR right? Is fear itself, “nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror” our greatest enemy…. or are you more terrified by that which can be named… nuclear war… small spaces… failure?

Over the Top, my artist of the week March 17, 2007

Glass necklace
It was my friend Jan who introduced me to Etsy in the first place…. and so Jan is more than fittingly my second Artist of the Week.

I worked with Jan on my one lone, teach me everything possible about making a film in 8 weeks stint in pre-production and as script supervisor for a wonderful indie film. Jan was the costume designer extraordinaire… and a pleasure to work with… especially on a chaotic indie film set.

Jan sent me an email about her etsy shop Over the Top and I just had to (more…)

Have I ever stolen anything… petty theft=rage? March 13, 2007

My answer to this week’s Question of the week, (see previous entry)… yes.. when I was in college I stole a pair of bowling shoes… I did it cuz it made me feel cool and hip and like I belonged…. but mostly it made me feel like shit and that I had compromised my integrity, and those shoes remained at the back of my closet, reminding me of how low I could stoop in search of other people’s approval, for years to come.

I have to say that yes, this weeks episode is fun, and funny, and people’s answers were really surprising… but mostly I found it kind of sad….. (more…)

Artist of the Week: Hilary Price March 7, 2007

I have a new obsession…… and you know me…. it can’t be simple…. there’s got to be some kind of deep emotional meaning to my obsession….what is this new fixation of mine…. a preoccupation that keeps my macbook pro steaming along at a scorching 98 degrees and my husband alone late at night in our bed…

ok.. I know… you probably already know all about Etsy….. but you must forgive me cuz I am sooo smitten…

it aint the fact that you can find gorgeous, creative, incredibly unique items there at wonderful prices, it aint the fact that sporting my new ETSY jewelry, bags etc I might just feel like the hippest gal around…it’s that this site does what I want to do most in the world.. it empowers artists.

Etsy is built by artists, for artists. Their goal is to earn a living from the art they create, and to support other artists….

Make a living with your art! Support other artists! And build an amazing site with an unbelievable user interface and a strong sense of community all at the same time…. It’s my dream production company in retail form…..

In the future I am going to wear my Etsy purchases on my videoblog, feature the artists work, link to their Etsy page, and feature the artist’s own answer to the “Question of the Week” as well. I already have my first Etsy artist lined up…. but we won’t be taping that episode for another few weeks.

In the meanwhile… one of my favorite Etsy purchases has been this stunning wallet by Hilary Price.

Now I was fond of my 5 year old J Crew wallet as well… but there is something about holding this wallet in my hand… the color, the workmanship, but most importantly that it is made by hand, and obviously with great care and a passion for Hilary’s own unique creative vision… that makes this wallet feel really really special….

Hilary has a bunch of equally beautiful wallets on her etsy site… I hope you will stop by and support a working artist!

Viral, Veoh, Podcasting, and why I am such a fan March 6, 2007

us on veoh

Nick and I are featured on Veoh’s show Viral this week… which isn’t just a wonderful thing… to me its an important thing… which has nothing to do with gaining exposure.

I am an actor and for so many years I lived completely in the world of auditioning… of waiting for someone else to tell me I was worth it… waiting for a nameless (and questionable?) panel behind a long folding table in a huge mirrored audition room to make my dreams come true.

Now, I know a ton of amazing people who are actors… but this atmosphere also seemed to breed a certain sense of “THERE IS NOT ENOUGH”, which can’t help but breed a sense of “IF I HELP YOU I RISK HURTING ME”… how else could one think when thousand and thousands of us are courting a miniscule amount of people who hold court over an equally minuscule amount of jobs.

This spilled over into our creative worlds as well. I have been ruminating on Chris Brogan’s blog for weeks now… about the boundless possibilities that are available to you when you work as a focused, passionate team… (more…)
